How I helped GS Doors in Kent migrate their domain and grow their organic search traffic.

About the Client

GS Doors is a high speed door company based in Dartford, Kent. It provides innovative speed door systems for a range of environments, including warehouses, distribution centres, factories, cold storage facilities and cleanrooms.

Client Brief

GS Doors required my freelance SEO services as part of a holistic digital marketing package.

The SEO works included the following:

  • Domain Migration – At the start of the project, GS Doors required a domain migration due to a business name change. This was a highly technical operation which required numerous steps to ensure a smooth transition from the old website domain to the new.

  • SEO Services – GS Doors needed a Kent SEO consultant to help boost rankings following the domain migration. This included a full website audit, content creation, technical SEO and local SEO.

  • Website Management – As part of the package, GS Doors needed a website manager to build new pages and populate them with keyword-rich content. This would require management of WordPress’s design tool WPBakery.

Domain Migration

As GS Doors has a loyal client base that uses the website regularly, it was essential the website wasn’t down for long. Therefore, I laid the necessary groundwork for the migration first to prevent any hitches.

This entailed:

  • Finding and listing all existing URLs via the sitemap for future redirection.

  • Finding and listing the external links to the website for future redirection.

  • Backing up and cloning the website.

  • Purchasing a new domain and SSL certificate.

With the foundations in place, I was able to facilitate the transfer by connecting the old domain to the new site via 123 Reg (the web hosting company). This phase also entailed using the 123 Reg control panel to forward the old URLs to the new site.

Before moving on to the last phase, I changed the WordPress address and site address to finalise the name change.

Finally, I requested a website name change in Google Search Console to ensure the new website appeared in search results. This included a re-submission of the sitemap.

I also changed all the meta and alt tags to reflect the new name while checking the Google Search Console for 404 errors.

Key SEO Services

While GS Doors had a small search engine presence, the company needed a concrete plan to help it reach top positions and drive more relevant, high-intent traffic to the website.

Here’s what I covered:

  • SEO Auditing – At the start the project, I conducted a thorough website analysis to identify SEO enhancements. The audit highlighted that the GS Doors website had thin content, a slow loading time and low search engine visibility, all of which needed to be addressed.

  • Keyword Research – To address the visibility issue, I used Rank Tracker software to find more keyword opportunities, focusing on specific door models and target locations. Further to this, I ran ‘keyword gap’ analysis to see which search terms rival companies were ranking for, providing further ideas.

  • Backlink Research – After assessing GS Doors’ backlink profile, it was clear the company needed more external links pointing to the website. To find link building opportunities, I carried out research and a competitor backlink analysis to uncover directories and door industry trade publications (e.g. Door Industry Journal).

  • Web Page and Content Creation – Using WordPress, I built various new web pages to reflect new target keywords, such as a dedicated ‘high speed cold storage door’ page. I also optimised existing pages for SEO and built a new case study area for project updates.

  • Site Navigation Improvements – As the website grew with the creation of new content, I restructured the site navigation. This entailed building a clear, logical dropdown menu, resulting in an improved user experience and search engine performance.

  • Technical Fixes – Technical improvements included internal linking, page speed optimisation, meta writing and breadcrumb integration. These factors are all part of the SEO ecosystem to help the website rank higher.

  • Local SEO – The keyword research highlighted opportunities for local organic SEO. For example, I created a dedicated London page based on the keyword ‘industrial doors London’. I also optimised the Google Business Profile by helping GS Doors to get more reviews and adding service areas for improved visibility UK-wide.

  • Website Management – This entailed uploading content regularly and performing ongoing SEO optimisation. I also solved occasional operational issues, preventing costly website downtime.

The Results

SEO results featuing 200 average visitors per month

  • Successful Domain Migration – Following the domain migration, GS Doors now has a fully functioning website that reflects its new name. While the migration was technical and challenging, I carried it out without hitches and with minimal downtime, ensuring the website was up running quickly for GS Doors’ loyal customers.

  • Brand Name Visibility – Through on-page SEO, internal linking and meta optimisation, and I ensured the website appears in first position for the brand name search ‘GS Doors’. This is important as another company in the residential door sector shares the same name.

  • Higher Keyword Rankings – The highly competitive 'high speed doors' keyword now commands a first page position, while many targeted niche keywords have achieved first position (e.g. 'high speed cold room doors'). Crucially, this has resulted in more organic traffic coming through the website.

  • Increased Traffic – GS Doors now attracts roughly 200 monthly visitors through Google’s organic search – increasing by 166 within six months. This growth has generated new organic leads for the Kent-based high speed door specialist.
